How They Are Made
I carefully make each pair of earrings with this step by step plan to ensure you receive beautiful handcrafted earrings.
-
I begin with a slab of clay about 4"x6" that is run through my pasta machine until it is well conditioned and smooth
Short explanation of Mokume Gane:
For this piece I used a sheet of pearl white and black about 4" squared 1/8 thick". I cut them in half, stacked them and repeated the stacking one more time. Onto the stack, I used a blade to cut through the layers in a grid pattern. I then kept pressing all four edges together and pressed down on the top until all cut sections were squised back together into a small block . Now the fun part: with a sharp tissue blade I began making thin slices along the top of the block. What emerges is the black and white grid pattern. I placed them on a black clay backing and cut out the shapes.
-
The pieces are then baked in my toaster oven on a low heat for I hour to ensure the clay is well cured.
-
When completely cooled, I went through 5 grits of sandpaper until they are silky smooth.
-
The next step is to give each piece a nice buffing to bring out a satin shine.
-
The final step is to assemble the pieces and place them on an earring tag.
-
Now they are ready to ship and for you to enjoy.
